Kiya's Own Words

My Story

When I was 18 years old, back in 2021 I started to take off on my family and run around with my friends on the Pine Ridge Indian reservation thinking I was grown. Thinking I could drink because I'd just turned 18. One night, we ran out of alcohol so we went to a bootlegger and bought a pint thinking it was vodka - but it was rubbing alcohol. Bootleggers would sell it for a easy way to get money telling people its vodka.

An hour later, I was throwing up blood and in so much pain. My mother had to call the ambulance not knowing what I did to myself, because I went home after being gone for days. I was at my grandparents house who I've always ran to because there was no structure there and I could do what I wanted.

By the time I got into the ambulance and transferred to the hospital, my liver was already shutting down my body and my mom was told my liver was at 50% Dr. Burgess from Pine Ridge IHS induced me into a coma and he made the choice to send me to North Dakota to Sandford on October 1st where they kept me alive until they transferred me to Mayo Clinic on October 3rd, on the 8th after 3 days I got put on the national liver transplant list and 3 days in had 3 different livers that came to me but on the fourth day I finally got a liver that was a match for my body.

I was in a coma for 13 days total and when I woke up i was scared because I couldn’t move my body , talk or walk on my own or even eat. My mom kept telling me I really hurt myself. I had so many tubes and wires connected to my body and medications it was a lot for me I was basically a baby relearning everything. For six months I went to therapy for every part of my body, my mental, emotional, physical.

During everything I've went through, my parents were there the whole time never leaving my side sleeping in the waiting rooms. They had to leave my family of 18 back home, which took a big toll on our family having financial problems and my nieces and nephews missing school.

After 6 months of therapy and relearning how to live my life with medications and a lot of restrictions on everything in my life, I finally got to go home. I stay in touch with my transplant team, and take yearly trips to Rochester, MN to get check ups and medical help. Coming back to the reservation where there's alcohol and drugs and very little things to do as a youth it was hard adjusting not being able to run around with my friends and doing the things they were doing.

My Near Death Experience

When I was in a coma, I had many dreams, and nightmares. One that stuck out to me was what I believe was a near death experience. I believe I went to heaven everything turned white and quite like my world stopped it was peaceful I was looking around and I noticed this gold like gate it was tall and far as you can see left and right.

In the opening doorway, my friend who committed suicide, was standing there smiling at me talking to me I could barely understand him but he told me I couldn’t be there yet.

My brother was there speaking to me but I couldn’t see him he was telling me to wake up saying “sister wake up you cant leave me sister wake up please” I then remember this is one of the last dream ive had before I came out of a coma and woken up. I never believed in such a higher power til that experience happened to me I started to pray more and believe theres a day well see our loved ones again it just wasn’t my time to be there yet. Before my incident, I've lost 4 people to suicide.

The Loss of My Best Friend

My best friend was my best friend since 6th grade. We've done everything together, it got to the point we were together everyday either at my house or hers. We never left each other sides. She was like my sister.

When everything that happened to me happened, my best friend was hurt and mad about everything. I had to leave her home because our parent wouldn’t allow her to come because of everything I was going through was a lot. Me and her was dealing with a lot of things like alcoholism, drug addictions. I was in Rochester, MN and my best friend  decided to take her life. She couldn’t handle being alone and the detoxing off of drugs.

When I woke up out of a sugery I was heartbroken by being told she committed suicide. I had to deal with the hospital things and now dealing with losing my best friend I was devasted. Last but not least, I was having a hard time having to cope with everything and losing myself and my teenage years to grief, alcohol and drugs.
